Determining first aid needs

To determine first aid requirements for your business complete a first aid risk assessment, taking into consideration:

  • the type of work you do at your workplace and the hazards;
  • size and layout of the workplace;
  • review the location and distance / response time for emergency services; and
  • the number of staff, shift coverage, contractors and seasonal workers and don’t forget coverage for leave.

Model Code of Practice: First Aid in the Workplace is a great source of information, providing guidance for completing first aid assessments.

Once you’ve determined your requirements, ensure you have first aid kits which are stocked and maintained (consider having the first aider check and restock the kit intermittently)

First Aiders must be hold current certification and their certification kept up-to-date.
